HOT CAREER TOPICS THIS WEEK 🔥
August 8, 2026
55% of you never negotiate your salary. Giler tak?
Half the working world is leaving RM (or USD, or whatever currency you're paid in) on the table, and not because they don't deserve more. Because the moment feels awkward lah, so people just… accept. This week I went through what's actually trending in career conversations online, and three topics kept showing up again and again.
---
1. THE SALARY NEGOTIATION CONFIDENCE GAP
Here's the stat that stopped me mid-scroll: roughly 55% of workers never negotiate an offer. Not "negotiate badly." Never even try.
I get it. Asking for more money feels like asking for trouble. What if they take back the offer? What if you look greedy? So you say "okay, terima kasih" and sign.
But the data this week tells a different story. People who use a competing offer as leverage badly, backfire. People who negotiate the whole package, not just base pay, walk away with $30K–$50K more over time. The gap isn't skill. It's confidence.
Doktor Az's take: negotiating is not about being cocky or greedy. It's about connecting your experience to what they need, and backing it up with proof. That's it.

2. THE BROKEN, AI-FILTERED JOB MARKET
This one broke my heart a bit, honestly.
One post this week said it best: "competing with 1,500 other people to please the robots." Another simply said "applying for jobs and this just broke me" — nearly 19,000 likes. That's not a typo. Nineteen thousand people nodding along in pain.
The job market right now feels rigged lah. ATS systems filtering resumes before a human even sees your name. Offers withdrawn after acceptance. And what people are saying now is this - Only a direct referral gets you into the interview room.
Doktor Az's take: the system is more broken than it used to be, that part is true. But don't let that make you stop trying smart. Referrals matter more now, so spend less time perfecting your resume font and more time messaging people who actually work there. Network like your job depends on it. Because, it does.

3. VISIBILITY BEATS MERIT FOR PROMOTIONS
Ouch. This one stings but it's true.
The theme this week: doing great work quietly does NOT get you promoted. Being visible to the right people does. One post put it bluntly — "Great work DOESN'T speak for itself." And on the flip side, someone shared doing three people's jobs, being promised a promotion, then watching an external hire get it instead. Sakit hati kan.
Doktor Az's take: I know it feels dirty to "promote yourself." Malaysians especially, we're taught to be humble, don't cari pasal, don't show off. But silence is not humility at work — it's invisibility. Speak up about your wins. Not giler bragging. Just facts, shared with the right people.

Three topics this week. One pattern: staying quiet — about your worth, your search, your work — isn't working anymore!
