CAB 8. Say My Name, Say My Name
Because it's the sweetest sound to my ear

Hello friends
We have been talking about how to make a great first impression in the context of networking situation. Being prepared with your elevator pitch and paying attention to your body language to enhance your communication.
This week is about the importance of remembering names.
Think back to the last time that someone unexpectedly remembers your name? Maybe at the hotel or restaurant that you frequently go to. How does it make you feel? It feels awesome when someone remembers your name, right?!
Why is that so?
It’s because “a person’s name is to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language”.

Therefore when we meet someone new, it is super important that we take note of the name and remember it.
You are probably now saying ‘But I am really bad at remembering names. I am good with faces but not with names.’
This is a common excuse that I always hear. So if you know that is a problem, how can you be more better?
There is a solution!
I learnt this technique from watching one of Jim Kwik’s video. He has this simple method to help you remember names. It is called BE SUAVE
B - Believe (Believe that you can do it)
E - Exercise (Must do the exercise again and again)
S - Say (Say the name when you first hear it)
U - Use (Use the name a few times in the conversation but not too frequently)
A - Ask (Ask about the name - spelling, origin, meaning etc)
V - Visualise (Visualise the name eg Adam - you can visualise Adam & Eve)
E - End (End the conversation with using the name)
You can read more about it here
So this is what I do when I meet someone new.
I will ask their name at the start. If it is an unusual name or a long name, then I will ask for the spelling or I will ask where is the name from. I will also ask them what do they like to be called (sometimes they already have a preferred shorter name). Throughout the conversation, I will mention their name a few times where appropriate. Then at the end, I will mention their name as I say good bye.
It is very doable and the more you do it, the more better you will get at it.
You will be amazed by how much it can help in establishing rapport with the person that you are talking to.
You can start from today.
Ask the name of the waiter or the waitress that is serving you this weekend and see the reaction from them.

Make sure you know how to pronounce the names of the decision makers in your company.

Ask the name of the waiter/waitress serving you in the restaurant this weekend. Use their names a few times in the conversation and see how quickly you can build rapport with them. (You can email me your stories!)

I am running a presentation training coming up on the 10th of September. I will be showing you how I prepare for a presentation. Step by step from the the first draft of the outline to the final ‘ready-to-go’ version.
