The Courage to be Disliked

Why you shouldn't care about what other people think

In 1985, I was eating ikan jaket in school canteen. You know the type of fish with the scales still on, not nice at all

Fast forward to 2025, a few weeks ago, I was eating wan tan noodle in Cathay Pacific lounge in Hong Kong airport. Just delicious.

How life has changed!

I wasn’t born with a silver spoon

My handsome dad was in the army and my beautiful mother was a housewife

They made sure all their children had good education

I was memang a nerd in school and university and made it as a doctor

But then realised  I don’t want to be a hospital doctor forever

So I moved into corporate world and had a successful career and here I am in 2025 enjoying the rewards for from my blood 🩸sweat 💦 and tears 😭 .

To say I’m grateful is an understatement

Sangat bersyukur to how my life has turned out and very very thankful to all the people who has helped me along the way.

We don’t often reflect on what we have achieved.

We are too busy with our current life, busy chasing the next target, the next job promotion that we forget to acknowledge our achievements that has gotten us this far

Just like me, I’m sure you have also come a long way.

So today just do that. Reflect back on your journey and enjoy that feeling

Doktor Az - The CareerlogistThis book changed my life.

It taught me to be happier.

It taught me to be more forgiving with myself and to accept who I am.

The book is The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga

It is an interesting book that explores the psychology of Alfred Adler

There were 2 powerful messages that I took away from the book.

The first one is about the importance of self acceptance.

About accepting who you are, without the need for approval from others.

We are often worried or stressed out by what other people think, by what people say about us. Especially in Asian culture with Asian parents.

Our parents wants the best for us. And in doing so can sometimes set very high standard and really drive us hard to achieve perfection.

I remember when I was in school, I was no 1 for all subjects except for English. I came second in English. And my dad asked me “Kenapa tak nombor 1 English?”

It can be quite demoralising when you hear that type of comments

After reading the book, I understood and accept that I will not be able to please everyone. It is impossible to do that.

What is important is for me to know that I have given my best and if my best is still not good enough for certain people, it does not really matter.

What I can control is about giving my best effort. What I cannot control is how people will react to my work.

The second powerful message from the book is about the importance of focusing on the presence. To live in the present time.

The past doesn’t exist anymore and the future has not happened yet.

So there is no point dwelling about what has happened in the past because you cannot change them anymore and there is no point in worrying about the future because it hasn't happened yet.

Focus on the now, enjoying what is around you.

Focus on the friends and family that you have.

Focus on doing work that gives you fulfillment

Focus on the good things currently in your life.
